For this illustration project, I had to create three editorial illustrations based on a common subject, story, or article. I chose to convey the message of social media addiction with my pieces. I taught myself how to use the Procreate app for this project, and these are the first pieces I have done with it.
For my first illustration, I chose the theme of "fishing" for likes in a sea of social media addiction. It is common in my generation to derive self-worth from how many likes we get on social media, and we always compare ourselves to others and how many likes they receive. We post only the best pictures of ourselves to, in a way, "fish" for likes. I decided to demonstrate that message by making the fish in the ocean the icons for likes on Facebook and Instagram.
My second illustration demonstrates "pouring a bowl of ego." We feed off of likes to grow our egos, and I wanted to show that by making a bowl of "cereal" where what you are feeding yourself is self-esteem.
For my last illustration, I chose to show how likes on social media can be our motivation. We strive to receive likes - like they are a reward for being our best. The girl in the image is working out on a treadmill chasing after a like. She wants to become fit for social media because she sees others posting their perfect bodies and feels that she needs to look a certain way to receive that praise.
